Survey, anyone? [11 Jan 2008|11:35am]

lifeisforliving
[ mood | tired ]

I came across this (this is not mine) - we know we all like to fill out surveys rather than doing real work! XD Especially helping a student out!

If you are a British Chinese in the age of 16-25, please take 5-10 minutes of your time to fill in the following survey:

On Chinese In Britain radio series [07 Jan 2008|09:36pm]

vash_chan
Hi all,

I remember someone posted a link to the BBC's website about the radio 4 show Chinese In Britain but unfortunately I missed the entire series when it was aired last year. Does anyone know another place where I can find all the audio files? Or does someone happen to have audio rips of all 10 episodes?

Any help is appreciated!!

What type of 'asian' are you? [25 Nov 2007|12:17pm]

tarepanda_girl
[ mood | amused ]

It's been eons since anyone posted anything.
Does anyone still use this, or have we all moved onto facebook now?
Haha anyway back to the point found something of interest ( a bit Americany though)
Me is so fobulous =D

Young Asians come in many forms. It is sometimes possible to be a combination of 2 or more.

Twinkie/BANANA:
Your significant other is not Asian and never has been.
You have few Asian friends, if any.
You are embarrassed at family events because you cannot speak your language and everyone has to switch to English to communicate with you.
You have no idea that the other types of Asians on this list even exist.
You think Hello Kitty is dumb and do not know what Sanrio is.
You are the only Asian on this list that does not know what Bubble Tea is.
You drive a Ford or some other domestic car and if you drive a Honda, it is stock.

Asian-American  BRITISH:
You claim yourself as Asian, but real Asians think you're whitewashed and non-Asians see you as a foreigner. You fit in nowhere.
You have heard of Bubble Tea but have never actually had any.
You are confused about your cultural identity and express this frustration through spoken word performances at your college.
You read A. magazine and think it's great.
You do not know who Leon, Aaron, Sammi, s7even, or Kangta are.
You are only vaguely aware of the other Asians below.

YAP (YOung Asian Professional)
You are in one of these professions:
a) Medicine/ Pharmaceutical
b) Engineering
c) Finance
d) Investment Banking
e) Accounting
-You go find fellow YAPs and meet up on Thursday nights
-You did exactly what your parents wanted you to do and as a result your life is hella boring
-Your parents always talk to their friends and relatives about how much money you make. If they don;t then you're a disappointment.

Fob (Fresh Off the Boat):
You were not born in America  UK.
You know who Leon, Aaron, Sammi, s7even, and Kangta are. In fact, you have seen them in concert recently.
You speak your native language fluently and so do all your friends.
You do not have any non-Asian friends.
Your parents do not speak any English.
When you speak English, you like to make everything plural.
You get extremely good grades in school.
You cannot dance.
Your fashion sense comes from whatever country you're from and you incorporate nothing from western fashion into your wardrobe.

SuperFob:
Your command of the English language is minimal and you don't care.
You like dim sum chicken feet.
You do not own a single CD, VCD, Video game, or DVD that isn't bootlegged.
Your only hangout is Chinatown.
All the lights in your house are fluorescent.
You dry your clothes outside your window.
You need a haircut.
You either smell like cigarettes or food.

Fobabee:
You are an Asian-British or Twinkie/Banana who has recently "awoken".
You have a newly found fetish of Asian girls/boys.
You have taken the Asian Studies course at college.
You are trying to learn as much as possible about your culture to make up for your lifetime of trying to be white.

Gangsta Fob:
If you are lucky, you will grow to become Fobulous Gangsta Fob.
You have shot another Asian.
Your favorite hangout is a pool hall.
When you talk, you sound like a cross between a Fob and an urban black kid.
Your hair looks silly, but no one will tell you because you'll shoot them.
You have a serious gambling problem.
You are a Rice-boy, but your mods are cheap and are never painted to match the rest of your car.
No one tells you your rice ride looks cheap because you'll shoot them.
You want to have a Tab girlfriend.

Tab (Trendy Asian B*tch):
You shop at A/X, Bebe, Banana Republic and Club Monaco. (sorry cannot find the British euivalent)

You only wear black and will occasionally wear white to "mix it up".
You do not weigh more than 105 lbs.
You have never paid for dinner at a restaurant in your life.
Platform heels are your favorite.
You are a makeup expert, in fact, you appear completely flawless.
You do not smile in public.
You are the object of desire of all Asian men and you know it.
You smoke.
Your cell phone is completely customized.
On the inside flip of your cell phone is a sticker pic of you and your man.
Somewhere in your purse is a Sanrio item.
You only date Asian and will only date a boy with a nice car.
You are often seen with Rice-boys.
You never travel alone. You are either in the company of other Tabs or your Rice-boy boyfriend.

Hoochie Tab:
You are an import car model.
Your boobs are not real.
There are naked pictures of you floating around on the internet somewhere.
Stiletto heels are your favorite.
Your role models are Francine Dee and Kaila Yu  or Tila Nguyen (I think they are more 'famous' in America)
Your boyfriend is a Gangsta Fob.
You cheat on your boyfriend.
Unlike most Asians, you do not do well in school.

Rice-Boy:
You drive an Asian import. Usually a Honda or Acura.
Your souped up car (known as a Rice-ride or Rice-rocket) is unrecognizable from it's original stock form.
Your exhaust pipe is big enough for your head to fit in.
The spoiler on your car looks like it was made by Boeing.
The interior of your car also looks like it was designed by Boeing.
You always drive like you are racing someone.
You are not afraid of dying in a crash, but you are afraid of speed bumps and parking lot on-ramps.
The only other person besides yourself who can sit in your car is your 105 lbs Tab girlfriend. If anyone else sits in your car, the entire bottom of it will be touching the ground.
Even though your car is a Honda, it goes faster and is worth more than a Lotus Esprit.
If you drive a Civic, your dream car is a Supra. If you drive a Supra, your dream car is a Skyline (which you can never have).

Fobulous:
You speak perfect English and you are fluent in your native language.
You have Asian friends as well as non-Asian friends.
You listen to Asian pop as well as American music.
You are equally aware of both popular American culture and Asian pop culture.
You are a good dancer.
You date Asian by choice even though you could rock the opposite sex of any other race.
You are a good designer and have superior HTML skills.
You have an Apt107 page AND an AA page and the guest books in both are packed.
For you, FOB stands for Fabulous Oriental Being.
You have lots of Asian pride.

[ mood | crushed ]

I feel so ashamed right now.
I went to get my exam results today and now I'm really upset, firstly for being stupid and lazy, secondly because i don't know how to face my family.
Its common right? for chinese/asain families to be strict on grades & education.
I got 2 B's which is acceptable (but should have been better~). 1 C which is pretty pathetic, especially since it was Maths -__-"
and god knows how this happened i got an 'E'. Not only will it disappoint and shock, its the most embarrassing and painful thing ever. I didnt even get an 'A' I really am worried about their reactions.
I dont want to sound like I'm over reacting but surely someone understands how i feel..
Expectations of us are always at the highest.. i have never not achieved them.

Who remembers Jin the ABC rapper? [14 Aug 2007|03:46pm]

vash_chan
[ mood | surprised ]

Even if rap style music isn't for most of us, Jin's music is fun to listen to (out of guilty pleasure).

Learn Chinese

And a song from his newer album - ABC [with English subs]

I just heard his new album which is the same name as the second MV and it is completely in Cantonese with one or two random English words inserted.

It's weird for me because as I was listening to most of his songs I realised I understood a lot of his lyrics, despite my Cantonese being very basic in general.

What the f**k is Danielle talking about towards the end of the clip? Chinese people use chopsticks. Frigging stupid girl. This is insulting. So glad she lost the six figure modelling contract.

hey people! hows it going? Just wanted to find out whats going on with this community? I see the mod job is in consideration? I really think that the regulars here should join up and promote it. I saw that the asian add community was promoting their site in one of the other communities. Maybe we should do that. But we really need a new layout though.

AHH A VERY HAPPY 2007 TO YOU ALL!! [03 Jan 2007|12:32pm]

ironicdawn
Heyhey! It's nice to see somebody posting in here! We are an AWFULLY quiet group...

Christmas was lovely for me, though I was actually out of the country myself...hahahaha I heard it was foggy though...New Year's Resolutions people? God I make these every year in the hope that I'll keep them for at least New Year's Day...Maybe I should just make a resolution next year - Keep my old resolutions! Ah...I'm just NOT disciplined enough...sigh...

I did watch the Ldn fireworks on TV - my family and I keep meaning to go down to Ldn to actually see them...but it's cold and crowded...and to be frank it's quite nice actually snuggled warm on the sofa with a cup of tea with your parents and watching the fireworks from there....

Shopping oh shopping - I'm dying to go buy some clothes, but no...sadly I have to wait until Chinese New Year before my finances brings itself back to normal! (oh god it's sad isn't it! The money is the highlight of the CNY! I'm so bad! >_<) Money is always in short for a student and just after Xmas....Mind you Dad let me go book shopping the other day and that has really cheered me right up! (Yeah I'm a bit of a geek and one of my favourite past times, sadly, is wandering through Waterstones/Borders.)

I must admit I'm not so much of a fan of Kdrama, I prefer Jdramas and Tw ones - though even sometimes the Tw ones I'm like "OMG get on with it!!" Obviously, I love the Cantonese ones best! Though sadly, back to Uni soon and no TV for another 10 weeks...I'll have to make do with YouTube/ people's uploads!

RIGHT omg that's my New Year's resolution of not procrastinating out the window...

Christmas... [05 Dec 2006|01:53am]

ironicdawn
Well if I can make it through the rest of this week alive the Christmas I'm sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeping!! omg!! I miss my bed so much!! hahahaha!! The sad fact is that I am quite serious!

Anyway...mm...well because it's my last year at Uni, part of the Xmas will be spent doing my dissertation and revising...and catching up with the stupidly large amounts of uni work I get over the term and didn't get round to doing....Usually go on holiday with my family which is nice. We're one of those families that don't plan holidays! We check Lastminute.com pack our stuff and go!! It's great! ^.^;;

I love Christmas though...just to spend time with family and friends. It's nothing special, but it is in a way.

This forum IS too quiet...I think when I'm next procrastinating I'll photoshop a banner for this community or something! Just to liven it up a bit...

Anyone else who is better at photoshoping than I am (which isn't hard cos my PS skills are not great...) going to join me in that venture?

How's the Xmas job hunting going btw?

double eyelids [21 Oct 2006|12:06am]

I know chinese people can make a deal about eyelids and stuff. Just today, I came across this non-surgical way of getting the infamous "double eyelid".

topic starter - language [19 Sep 2006|07:19pm]

miz_mayla
People are saying that china is booming at the moment and my dad says that in future it will be so big that people will move over there to get decent jobs. Does anyone ever worry about having to learn mandarin cause i know most chinese people speak cantonese (apart from if you're in H.K, where most learn or pick up mandarin). Even though some of us speak cantonese and should be able to pick it up, what about those who are raised to speak in english only? Even if we do speak chinese at home, the rest of the time when we're out we communicate in english, so does anyone fear about having to learn a whole new dialect all together?
